The customs and people of the Maldives were greatly influenced by Indians, Sri Lankans, North Africans, Arabs and Europeans traveling through the trade routes of the Indian Ocean.

The official name of the world’s lowest country, Maldives, is the Republic of Maldives, a country with an average elevation of just 1.5 meters above sea levels. It is located around 1000 kilometers away from the mainland Asia in the Indian Ocean. Once a British protectorate, Maldives got independence from the U.K in 1965. This island country features atolls, coral islands and coral reefs. It has around 1200 islands of which only 198 have human beings currently inhabiting. This is also Asia’s smallest country in terms of both land and population. Its citizens are known as Maldivians.
Maldivians are ethnically and linguistically Indo-Aryan, speaking an Indo-Aryan language Divehi. Mahal, a dialect of Divehi, is also spoken on the island of Minicoy in the Indian territory of Lakshadweep. Divehi developed over the years under the influence of languages such as, Arabic, Persian, Hindustani, English, French and Portuguese. Islam is the predominant religion of the country.
The country’s economy is largely dependent on its tourism industry with significant contribution made by the fishing industry too. Its tropical monsoon climate and natural beauty along the sea beaches make it one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Asia. Due to the scarcity of agricultural land and drinking water, the country’s agricultural production is limited and most of its agro products including staple foods are imported from outside. Their economy lacks diversification. Besides tourism and fishing, it has some other industries including garments, coconut procession, shipping, boat building, handicrafts, and so on.
While around one thousand islands have no human settlement, Maldives capital Male is among the world’s most densely populated cities, which is truly an irony for Asia’s least populated country. Maldives have historically been an active participant in international trade because of its favorable geographical location.
However, the same geographical existence in the Indian Ocean has now put the country’s future into an imminent danger from environmental causes. Because Maldives lie just one and half meters above sea levels, the rising sea levels could see the country getting completely submerged in the sea at some point in future. As part of the damage-control measure, its government has vowed to make it a carbon-neutral country by 2019.
Maldives do not have a strong footprint in world sports, though its football team has brought some honors to the country in recent years, winning the SAFF Championship title twice in between 2008 and 2018.

The little wave.
A little wave was bobbing along in the ocean and was having a grand old time. He was enjoying the wind and the fresh air as it travelled– until he noticed that all the other waves in front of him were crashing against the shore. “Oh My God, this terrible”, The little wave thought. “Look what is happening to all the other waves and I will have to face the same fate!”
When the little wave was in the state of panic another wave came across and asked the little wave, “Why are you distressed my friend?”
The little wave said, “We are all going to crash against the shore and face our end! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?”
The second wave answered with a smile, “No, you don’t understand. You’re not just a wave, you are a part of the ocean.”

Welcome to today's conversation. The Republic of Maldives is a small island country in South Asia. The country consists of 26 atolls. The language of Maldives is called Dhivehi language. In Dhivehi, the word "Atoll" means administrative sub division.With a population of 4,27,756 Maldives is the smallest Asian country. The country's capital is Malé.
Maldives has a long history and it is intertwined with that of the Indian sub-continent. Dravidian people first settled in these islands since India and Sri Lanka are very close. The people of Giraavaru, an island in Male atoll were considered the first settlers.
Interesting fact is cowrie shells are abundant in Maldives and in ancient times, these shells were used as currencies throughout Asia and parts of East African coast. In ancient period, Hindu and Buddhism had a great influence on the country. Sea traders during Kalinga Kings came here and spread Buddhism. In the 16th century, the Portuguese, the Duth and the French tried to take over the country. In the 19th century Maldives became a British Protectorate.
A small country, Maldives is known all over the world for its natural beauty. Tourists from all over the world visit Maldives. Tom Cruise, the famous Hollywood actor, visited Maldives for honeymoon after he married actress Katie Holmes.
